Professor Dr. Mohamed Sulaiman


Emeritus Professor Mohamed Sulaiman,

PhD (Wales), MBA (Leuven, Belgium), BA (Malaya)

Professor Emeritus Mohamed Sulaiman was the founding Dean of the School of Management at USM, Penang. He was Tun Razak Chair Professor at Ohio University and before his full retirement he was Head of the Business Administration Department at IIUM. He was awarded the Emeritus Professor title by University of Science Malaysia (USM) in the Convocation of August 2008 for his contribution to the University and his field of study. Prof Mohamed is a specialist in Strategic Management, having taught the subject to graduate and undergraduate students for more than 35 years. His subsidiary subject is leadership.

He joined USM in1981 after having served the state government of Pahang and the Federal Government as Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in the capacities of Assistant District Officer, Raub, Assistant Secretary Ministry of Local Government, Lecturer and Program Coordinator at INTAN. He ventured to join the private sector as General Manager of Sarawak Motor Industries. After three years in the private sector, he came back to teaching by joining USM in Penang. There he stayed until his retirement in 2007.

While at USM, he was program coordinator and Deputy Dean of the School of Social Sciences before being appointed as the Foundation Dean of the School of Management in 1989. The School had grown from humble beginnings of offering bachelor’s degree to offering of MBA, PHD and DBA. Its MBA was cited as one of the best MBA programs in the Asia-Pacific region in 1997.

Prof. Mohamed has published more than 60 papers in international journals and chapters in books. He coauthored a book entitled “Jejak Bisnes Rasul” (Following the Footsteps of the Prophet’s Business). He has presented numerous papers in national and international conferences. He had supervised and graduated 28 PhDs and DBAs in USM. Since joining IIUM in 2007 he has supervised and graduated 6 PhDs and 2 DBAs. He is still supervising 1 DBA student at IIUM.

He holds BA (Economics) from the University of Malaya, MBA with Distinction from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium and PhD from the University of Wales, Cardiff.

He was visiting professor at many Universities in Malaysia and the region such as UiTM, UMS, USU, Medan, Universitas Shaikh Kuala, Acheh. He was also Visiting professor at Indiana University, Indianapolis and Southern Illinois University in 1994/ 1995, Tashkent Technical University, Uzbekistan in 1997. He was also Euro-Asia Professor of Management in October- November 1996. The feather in his cap was the Razak Chair Professorship at Ohio University, USA 1997 – 2000.

As from July 2012 to July 2013 he was appointed Chair Professor of Islamic Management by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He was Head of Department for Business Administration, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia from 2008 to 2012.

Prof Mohamed Sulaiman founded the Asian Academy of Management (AAM) in USM in 1994. The AAM convenes the AAM conference once every two years, attended by about 200 local and international participants. The AAM also publishes two journals (Scopus indexed); the AAM Journal and the AAM Journal of Accounting and Finance.

He is married to Roaini Mohd Jelas, has four children and six grand-children. He enjoys a game of golf and sport-fishing.
